With stories you would struggle to believe, you begin to understand, after spending time with Gabriel, that genius often comes in many forms. In all the time I knew him, he never ceased to amaze me. He is a servant in music, skating, cooking, and the list goes on. He is currently studying law in his home country, Guatemala. I mean it when I say I have never come across a brain like his. A glance at a big number and he will never forget it for as long as he lives a gift he describes as more of a burden being careful not to look at people’s credit cards, as it will be stored for life in his mind.

Elodie

“I was born with a darkness inside of me. From as long as I can remember, I found it so difficult to be happy. I wanted to take my own life from 14 years old. Drugs became my escape”

Elodie’s story, though close to impossible to sermise, stuck me as one of triumph over what was undoubtedly a bad hand to be dealt mentally. She has struggled with addiction and deep patches of bitter sadness. When I met her, however, she was in the process of taking her life into her own hands, moving countries and finding the things that bring her fulfilment. Her story now serves as a beacon of hope for those who may feel hopeless.

Alfrien

If ever there was a symbol for perseverance for passion in the face of adversity, it would be Alfrien. Soon after walking into his film shop in Bogota, he told me with such joy in his eyes how he has been operating this camera shop for over 50 years, since he was only 20 years old. The majority of that time, his country lived in a permanent state of unrest and civil conflicts. What events fell upon his eyes? How many memories has he seen come alive? As he curated through tens of thousands of personal archives. Is this what has kept his life from spite? What has kept his spirit so bright?
